Workshops for forest-restoration practitioners

Language:

workshopsYoi teaches Karen College lecturers from Myanmar about seed handling at FORRU-CMU's nursery on Doi Suthep.Workshops for forest-restoration practitioners are aimed at NGO's, government officials and agencies, international bodies and university students. A wide variety of modules are available and can be mixed and matched to suit participants' needs. A standard workshop usually lasts 3 days, but one-day introductory training is also available, as well as 5-day programs, which include working closely with participants to plan their own restoration projects.

Depending on the time available, workshops can include: -

  • Classroom work (Doi Suthep Nature Centre) - theory of forest succession, principal restoration concepts etc.
  • Exploring reference forest ecosystems - forest ecology, biodiversity, seed-dispersal and recognizing characteristic tree species.
  • Tree nursery skills - learning how to propagate tree seedlings ready for planting, production scheduling etc.
  • Field work in the restoration plot system - pre-planting surveys, organizing tree-planting and monitoring indicators of restoration success.
  • Optional - use of drones for restoration-site surveys and monitoring success - flight planning, flying missions, image processing etc.
  • Community aspects - political and socio-economic issues are explored during discussion sessions with Ban Mae Sa community members, who have been involved in forest restoration since 1996.
  • Back to the classroom - FORRU staff assist participants to plan their own restoration projects, by applying skills and knowledge acquired during the workshop.

Workshops are most commonly run in Chiang Mai, focusing on northern Thailand forest ecosystems (both deciduous and evergreen), but we can also provide training at participants' project sites in SE Asia (although the latter requires more organization).

FORRU-CMU tailors workshops to satisfy the specific needs of participants, so please feel free to contact us if you would like to start planning a workshop for your organization.

FORRU-CMU runs a concise 3-day workshop on flying drones to assist with various restoration tasks. Day-1 flight planning, Day-2 flying and Day-3 image processing. This video shows Day-2 of the workshop we ran for Lao PDR University personel under the FRAME Project.
