Since children gain most from forest restoration, FORRU-CMU provides quality educational opportunities to the younger generation, equipping them with forest-restoration skills and knowledge, based on the unit's research. We work with both local and overseas schools in Thai or English. Activities take place at FORRU's nurseries or field sites, and can include walks along forest trails on Doi Suthep and at Ban Mae Sa Mai (Mae Rim District). Alternatively, FORRU-CMU's Education Team can facilitate activities on school campuses.
Activities vary from interactive group learning of restoration principles in a classroom, to practicing hands-on tasks in tree nurseries, field plots and natural forest.
In the nursery, pupils learn about fruit and seed structures, how to germinate seeds and pot up seedlings correctly, and how to care for tree seedlings until they grow tall enough to plant out.
A forest walk, to visit the giant fig-tree trail near our Doi Suthep Tree Nursery, is particularly popular. Along the way pupils learn how forests regenerate naturally and the importance of biodiversity. They are also introduced to some of the most interesting plants of upland evergreen forest and their life histories.
Events are tailor made, to suit both the age range of the pupils and syllabus requirements, by discussion between teachers and FORRU-CMU staff. Preparatory site visits can also be arranged. Group sizes per event are limited to 35. All school pupils are provided with a copy of our cartoon book "Grow a Forest with Lin and Sia". More details and costs are presented in the PDF brochure, via the download panel.
