In 2024, the Doi Suthep National Park Authority asked FORRU-CMU to help with restoring a burnt, degraded site, near Ban Pong Yeang Nork, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai, by planting saplings of native tree species, typical of bamboo-deciduous forest. Tree saplings were grown in the community tree nursery at Ban Mae Sa, by local villagers. SIG Combibloc Ltd. generously donated towards the cost of the project, coordinated by the Rajapruek Institute Foundation (RIF).
Tree planting at the site was implemented over 3 days.
- On 29th June 2024 : FORRU-CMU collaborated with Doi Suthep National Park officers, local villagers and students from the YFR Project. (Experiment area - testing fertilizer dose)
- On 11th July 2024 : FORRU-CMU joined with SIG Combibloc Ltd to plant 1 rai of the buffer zone with 400 saplings.
- On 13rd July 2024 : FORRU-CMU collaborated with Doi Suthep National Park officers and more students from YFR Project to complete planting of the buffer zone.
SIG Combibloc Ltd. donated 100,000 baht to support both the planting and ongoing care of the restoration area. Their generosity ensured that the planted trees received the necessary maintenance to thrive.
On July 11, 2024, a dedicated team of 35 employees from SIG Combibloc Ltd., in collaboration with RIF, joined hands with FORRU-CMU staff to have a more tangible impact on the site, by planting 400 saplings.
FORRU-CMU contributed to the success of the event by providing expert guidance on proper planting techniques. The team demonstrated each step of the process, to ensure the seedlings were planted correctly, giving them the best chance of survival. After planting, the SIG team applied 50 g fertilizer to each tree, to boost their initial growth and resilience.
This initiative highlights the power of collaboration in ecological restoration. Thanks to the commitment of SIG Combibloc Ltd., and its partners, another step has been taken towards restoring bamboo-deciduous forest to this area for the future use and enjoyment of the younger generation of the nearby communities.
