ABSTRACT: Rafflesia kerrii Meijer, Thailand's largest flower, is described from buds examined at Khao Sok National Park, Southern Thailand, in greater detail than previously reported. Current knowledge of the distribution, status and ecology of the species is reviewed. Threats to the survival of R. kerrii include habitat destruction and over-collection by local villagers for medicinal purposes and other reasons. R. kerrii's status is vulnerable, according to the IUCN Red Data Book. We suggest that R. kerrii should be promoted as a tourist attraction, in conjunction with a well-planned education program, to provide an economic incentive for local people to protect the species. We also suggest that the Government enacts legislation to protect Thailand's botanical treasures, including R. kerrii.
