Restoring conservation forests in northern Thailand and the monitoring of frugivorous birds
Blakesley, D. & S. Elliott, 2000. Restoring conservation forests in northern Thailand and the monitoring of frugivorous birds. Oriental Bird Club Bulletin, 31: 23-26.
During tropical forest restoration, birds play a crucial role in dispersing seeds from nearby forest into restoration sites. The framework species method of forest restoration is designed to attract them. The Oriental Bird Club was keen to have this principle explained to its members and that birdwatchers could play a positive role in supporting forest restoration. David Blakesley, who was instrumental in FORRU-CMU’s foundation and an active OBC member, penned this piece for the club’s Bulletin in 2000. Subsequently, OBC became a staunch supporter of FORRU’s work in Krabi in the hope that habitat restoration might save the Thailand population of Gurney’s Pitta from extirpation. The club provided financial support to keep our tree nursery there operational, when other funds were in shortly supply.
