Current Projects
Some programs have attracted
funding to obtain longer term support from FORRU-CMU, including
not only training workshops, but support visits and assistance in
project planning, nursery management, and framework tree species
research. FORRU-CMU's involvement depends entirely on the demands
of the project. FORRU is currently involved in:
Workshops and Training Programs
Training programs are aimed at
NGO's, government officials and agencies, international bodies,
and university students. Workshops usually involve spending time
in the nursery and learning about propagation and germination techniques,
phenology studies, and general nursery care. A trip to the Hmong
village of Ban Mae Sa Mai is undertaken to see the experimental
plots that FORRU-CMU has planted over the past 8 years and to witness
first-hand the results of the Framework Species Method. The trip
to Mae Sa Mai is also important as it gives the participants a chance
to see the restoration plots first hand, and to have a discussion
with the community and learn from them what it means to be a part
of this project. FORRU-CMU is able to tailor a workshop for your
specific needs, so feel free to contact
us (email: forru[at]science.cmu.ac.th)
if you are interested. Examples of the international workshops that
FORRU-CMU has run include:
-
In August – September
2007, FORRU-CMU hosted an intensive training program in framework
forestry to two staff from Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve,
Tengchong Nursery Station, Yunnan, China, supported by ICRAF-China.
The Ban Mae Sa Mai nursery/education centre and field trial
plots were used to teach site monitoring and maintenance as
well as demonstrating FLR and Framework Species Method.
-
Darwin Initiative workshop
“The Future of Forest Restoration Research Indochina”
Chiang Mai, March 2008. 52 participants from Thailand, Cambodia,
Lao PDR, Vietnam, Indonesia and the U.K.
-
In September 2008, FORRU-CMU
ran 5-day training program in forest restoration methods for
Vietnamese foresters, involved in the WWF - Greater Mekong “Biodiversity
Corridor Initiative” (funded by ADB).
